Evelin Kasikov

Really amazing work by Evelin Kasikov. She has re-created the half tone printing process in cmyk with embroidery. Turned what would be dots into crosses which she then stitches through. The more intense the colour the more times she threads through the cross.

Consume Peckham

My film is one of the 16 and is due to be screened at Peckham Plex Cinema on the 8th of December. It touches on the art scene in Peckham and features some of the studio spaces and galleries and gives an insight it to what is happening art wise south of the river.

Adding Value

A creative response to a research project.

I am here

My first project of the second year, a completely open brief entitled 'i am here'. I began to think about the trace we leave behind by just living. I wanted to record this in someway so decided to leave stencils in the places I seem to spend alot of time in around my house. I left them there for a week the idea being that typography would be created from my trace. I left one on the kitchen table and one on my desk. They spelt 'kitchen table i am here most mornings and evenings' and 'bedroom desk i am here most evenings'.

Squishy

After being put into groups of 3 we then had to pick a title out of a hat.Ranging from 'whats round the back' to 'the little black flying machine'.We got 'Squishy' which we then had to create a one minute film that best conveyed our title.

Initial Idea (Pink Floyd - Dark Side of the Moon)

I set up 3 mirrors in my bathroom, closed the door and filled with smoke.I then pointed a red laser pen into one of them.
The effects are depicted above and are quite interesting. As they are only experiments the photo quality isn't great but im happy with the results.
I feel that the Album cover i have chosen is highly iconic and that im not sure i want to completely loose that but rather enhance or update its feel.

A Popular Brief

A brief to re-design your favourite vinyl album.
Immediately grabbed by this brief as i'm a great fan of vinyl and have been collecting from a young age.
There were a few that immediately popped into my head, but i settled on Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon. A truly iconic album cover designed by Hipgnosis.

Mail Art A1 Poster (pre sending)

mail art poster blog

Anthony Mccall Vertical Works

I recently experienced Anthony Mccalls latest exhibiton just across from Baker Street tube, entitled Vertical Works.

The exhibiton is held in a giant warehouse which is pitch black. There are four projectors mounted on the ceiling which each project beams of white light onto the floor creating patters that slowly move and change. In each of the four corners there are also smoke machines that keep the room at a constant smoky level adding to the experience as the smoke plays upon the beams of light. Check it out!

PHT Collective

After posting our initial test five pound notes we have come to the decision that we are to make this into a London-wide test. Testing the postal system in each of London's 33 boroughs by sending a five pound note to each.
We have began to form an identity for the test and have set up a blog where all information surrounding it will be recorded.

Mail Art

After collecting as a group we started to throw around ideas. We realised that we all enjoyed the 'Postman's choice' idea. Which consists of a blank postcard with two different addresses on either side, leaving it up to the Postman to decide which address the post card will end up at.
Also after looking at other mail art we also liked the pieces where people had tried to stretch the postal system by sending abnormal objects stamped and addressed e.g a pebble. We decided that we would like to test the postal system in some form.

We came up with the idea of sending money through the post in ways that would tempt the Postman. Almost a trust exercise between us and the Postman/Postal System. We then went on to create a series of envelopes/packages that would contain a £5 note (shown in the slideshow below). Some we made small slits in the front of the envelopes so you could clearly see what was inside. Others we simply put in clear envelopes making it pretty blatant. The note pictured above was the extent of our tests as we have simply stamped and addressed a £5 note.We selected the four best and have posted them to each other.

Stop Frame Animation

Today I met with Emily to start and finish our animation project. The project is based on Zapf Dingbats typeface and we were to create an animation between 10-20 seconds using only characters found in the typeface.  For our animation we decided to create a fire works display as many of the characters reminded us of explosions/fireworks. The process is fairly drawn out from start to finish. Having to cut everything out and then move characters individually whilst taking photographs but it is well worth it for the end result which I will post on here when I get it.

Mail Art

Today we were into uni by 10 o'clock and then shortly directed into the lecture theater where a briefing was to be held. I was then very quickly introudced to the world of 'Mail Art'. A world where anybody could send artwork to anybody else, not knowing what you would receive or when. Immediately I was grabbed by this concept and found it very interesting. Something that is easily accessible for all and has an almost limitless audience.
We are to work in groups of 3/4 with our only real guidance is that we are asked to have a final outcome. How we go about getting that through Mail Art is completely up to us and open.
Upon a quick search on the net I immediately found a project set at the University of Brighton where students had to send some form of experience from their travels/holdiday back to the university.

Shrine Project Combining Slogans & The Forest

After a presentation we each had to give based on our passion we were paired up and then asked to create a 'shrine' representing both our passions. My partners passion was slogans and mine was the forest.
After experimenting with a variety of ideas including making dens in the woods we finally settled on the idea of creating a slogan out of natural materials found in the forest. We experimented with carving into trees, making out of red holly berries, leaves and lots of other materials until realizing that moss was the most effective.
We then went through a very drawn out process of selecting the right kind of slogan to use. Settling on 'Better than Word' an ambiguity as they are words makes it interesting also with a connection to Microsoft Word.
We then went on to recreate our slogan out of moss on a tree in the woods! the result shown above became our shrine. We were very pleased with the result and feel the image represents each of our passions equally.

New North Press

Following the letter press workshop I attended at Graham Bignell's studio in Hoxton. Monday I volunteered to help batch print the final piece in preparation for the Reverting to Type exhibition opening Thursday.
Getting to go back for a second slice of the studio was real good and it was great to see the final piece printed. Myself and a fellow student worked form 10 til around 7 rolling out prints which as a great experience.

The show opens tomorrow at the Stand Point Gallery, Hoxton. So get down and check it out!

The last of the development photos and variations of a final piece

I have finally completed my bad type project!

The final piece has to be 3 photos. A before, during and after shot of the destruction. I had a friend shoot alot of photos whilst I destroyed the letter so I just had to sift through the majority to pick out the best three.

Below I have a few variations of my final 3 images. I'm unsure as yet which I will submit I think I prefer the last one as it has more of a focus on the V.

Development of my concrete 'V' destined for destruction.

For the second part of our bad type brief we have to create our assigned letter in any form and then DESTROY it. The letter i have been assigned is capital V in Hobo typeface which was on our list of the top 10 worst typefaces.
I have chosen to recreate mine from concrete and then once its set, destroy it using an appropriate tool e.g sledgehammer!
The slideshow depicts the development shots as i make the wooden mold and fill with conrete.

Tradional letterpress work shop courtesy of Graham Bignell at New North Press

Friday we received a warm welcome from Graham at his studio in Hoxton.  Quickly followed by a re-brief on the project in hand - 'a cockney alphabet'  each of us in the group were assigned a letter of the alphabet which was partnered with a selection of phrases for e.g A...for o'rses, X...for breakfast and so on. We had to choose one of the phrases and then start digging through the shelves of type to find typefaces that tickled our fancy! Once settled on two typefaces, one for the letter and one for the phrase we were  then able to set our type in a square format. Ready for proofing and then eventually to be printed alongside all the groups letters forming a cockney alphabet.

Graham has an exhibiton coming up at the stand point gallery entitled 'Reverting to type' all about the beauty of letterpress where the final piece will be exhibited.

Wednesday, 3 November 2010

we were given a location, put in groups and asked to make a 3 minute presentation that would inspire.

A really interesting insight into community around the area. Most people were surprised to see something being given away for nothing. We were frequently asked 'how much' or 'what are you advertising'.
