Tradional letterpress work shop courtesy of Graham Bignell at New North Press

Friday we received a warm welcome from Graham at his studio in Hoxton.  Quickly followed by a re-brief on the project in hand - 'a cockney alphabet'  each of us in the group were assigned a letter of the alphabet which was partnered with a selection of phrases for e.g A...for o'rses, X...for breakfast and so on. We had to choose one of the phrases and then start digging through the shelves of type to find typefaces that tickled our fancy! Once settled on two typefaces, one for the letter and one for the phrase we were  then able to set our type in a square format. Ready for proofing and then eventually to be printed alongside all the groups letters forming a cockney alphabet.

Graham has an exhibiton coming up at the stand point gallery entitled 'Reverting to type' all about the beauty of letterpress where the final piece will be exhibited.
